Hockey Australia
Telstra
Hockeyroo, Claire Mitchell-Taverner has made a shock announcement that she is
retiring from international hockey.
Mitchell-Taverner, the second most capped player in the Hockeyroos, will be a
significant loss to the Australia’s Gold Medal winning team who suffered a
large number of retirements following the Sydney Olympics.
With 180 caps, 47 international goals, Olympic, World Cup, Commonwealth Games
and Champions Trophy Gold Medals behind her, Mitchell-Taverner has decided that
the time is right for her to move onto other things.
“I’m ready to put the energy that I’ve previously put into the sport into
other areas of my life”, Mitchell-Taverner declared. “I am very proud of
what I’ve achieved and contributed more than I ever thought I could.
“I feel I’ve given everything I can to the sport as a player and I’m tired
of the commitment. I want to play golf. I want to play some social sport. I want
to explore other possibilities in life”.
Australian Coach, David Bell, who has spoken at length with Mitchell-Taverner in
recent weeks, has accepted her decision graciously.
“I’m disappointed to be losing her experience”, Bell said, “but the
decision is always the player’s and I recognise that its a very difficult
decision for a player to retire from international sport. I’m please she took
a logical step in not retiring on an emotional high straight after the
Olympics”.
The Olympic Gold Medallist has already begun exploring other aspects of her
life, recently taking up the position of Media Manager with Hockey Australia
with a view to commencing a new career path in the media industry.
“I am really enjoying the new challenge,” the veteran of 180 international
caps said. “My job would allow me to have continued playing, but to work and
play elite sport doesn’t leave much time for anything else. I have put all my
eggs in one basket for a long time and I’m ready to explore other options”.
Mitchell-Taverner first broke into the national team in 1993 and has been a
consistent member of the Telstra Hockeyroos through a period that has earmarked
them arguably, Australia’s most successful team ever.
“As a hockey player she is someone who is very versatile, which is something
of a rarity, so she is a huge bonus in that respect, “ Bell said. “Her
ability to score goals is impressive and one that most players would be proud of
and she is outstanding, if not the best in the world in short corner trapping.
“Claire’s desire to achieve is second to none and this was highlighted by
her ability to bounce back from an emotional down after missing out on Olympic
selection in 1996 by the narrowest of margins. I hope that many of our younger
players can emulate some of those things.”
Claire Mitchell-Taverner’s full profile and playing record can be found on the

La FIH decidió asignar a China como sede de la Championstrophy femenina del año 2002 y a Alemania como sede de la masculina .
The Executive Board of the International Hockey
Federation (FIH) has awarded the 2002 Women’s and Men’s Champions Trophies
to the Chinese Hockey Association and German Hockey Association (Deutscher
Hockey Bund) respectively.
The Women’s event will take place in Macau, China from 23rd August to 1st
September 2002 and the Men’s in Cologne from 30th August to 8th September
2002. The event was scheduled to take place in Belgium, though the Royal Belgian
Hockey Association was forced to withdraw as host organiser, for financial
reasons.
It will only be the second time that China has hosted a major hockey event,
following Beijing’s hosting of the Asian Games in 1990. Accordingly, their
hosting of the 2002 Women’s Champions Trophy is viewed as an important
development step for hockey towards the 2008 Olympics, recently awarded to
Beijing. The Chinese women’s hockey team has recently enjoyed success, beating
Korea in the final to win the Korean Telecom Cup, held in Seongnam, Seoul this
month. Many will regard this as China’s best chance yet to win the Women’s
Champions Trophy
Current European champions Germany will be looking to complete a home hat-trick
of wins, having won the Men’s Champions Trophy on the two previous occasions
that it has hosted the event, in 1991 and 1995. They have won the Champions
Trophy a record seven times, joint with Australia. Germany recently beat
Holland, Korea and Pakistan to win the Panasonic Cup, held in Hamburg in June
this year.
Both China and Germany achieved fifth place at the Sydney Olympics.
Mrs Els van Breda Vriesman, FIH President, commented it was extremely important
that we acted swiftly and that the tournaments were awarded to strong hockey
nations with the capability to host hugely successful events. Following the
excellent bids from the countries we are confident that we may look forward to
two excellent Champions Trophy tournaments.’’
